The works began in 1919 and ended in 1923. The building is monumental: the ground floor is 32 m wide and 42 m deep, with access to parallel streets, Avenida de Mayo and Hipólito Irigoyen. Between both streets a pedestrian walkway with commercial premises was drawn. The covered area is 16,630 m2 distributed in eighteen floors and two basements. The structure was made entirely of reinforced concrete, an unprecedented technique in the country.
The Barolo Palace was the first iron-framed building and the tallest in Buenos Aires until the construction of the Kavanagh (1936). It was the first construction considered as a ´´high building´´ in Buenos Aires, since it reaches 100 m. The Palace is topped by a 300,000-candle rotating beacon, used to announce news in times when there was no radio, as the result of the famous fight between Dempsey and Firpo in New York in 1923.
However, the most striking thing is Mario Palanti's particular style: it combines modern elements –concrete structure, standard floors to organize office floors, bow-windows, etc.–, while making reference to other buildings –for example , the "Rajarani Temple" -, taking motifs from various moments in the history of architecture.
However, this repertoire of styles obeys a severe symbolism. With this building, Palanti wanted to pay tribute to Dante Alighieri as the highest representative of the Latin genius. The Palace is full of analogies and references to the Divine Comedy. Palanti adheres to a tradition that began with the Gothic cathedral: the building is an illustrated model of the cosmos. Thus, “The floor of the building is built based on the golden section and the golden number. The general division of the Palace and of the Divine Comedy is in three parts: Hell, Purgatory and Heaven ”.
Palanti carried out his work in obsessive correspondence with the poetics and the partitions and hierarchies of Dante's universe: the Pythagoreans, Aristotle, Ovid, Horace, Virgil and the Testaments. The correspondences are innumerable and amazing.
The building was inaugurated in 1923, although Luis Barolo did not see the work finished since he died shortly before. In 1997 it was declared a National Historic Monument and a few years ago –2002– it was fully restored following the original plans.
