Troja Castle is one of the most important Baroque works of the Czech Republic, located in the vicinity of Stromovka Park. Its creation was marked by very special circumstances: an art-loving partner, a brilliant architect and a team of first-class painters and sculptors.
Before a castle, we can speak of Troja as a peripheral village whose structure is inspired by the spacious villas that were built around Rome during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. However, the building can be called a castle, since its creation influenced the construction of other castles in Bohemia.
The Castle of Troja was built in several stages between 1678 and 1695. Its decoration was finally completed in 1703 and its construction differed radically from the other castles that had been built in Bohemia at that time. In place of the traditional composition of four wings spread around a central courtyard, Mathey placed the building in the center to which the side wings were attached. The gala room is located in the central axis of the complex, besides being connected directly to the garden, emphasizing the central functions of festive place and rest.
Its lateral wings create the appearance of a courtyard of honor. The silhouette of the building was completed by the low ceilings of the halls, and changes if observed from the central portal of the garden. Its location on a terrace suggests the shape of a fortification and the whole also has a large baroque garden.
The painted and carved decoration of the castle are the elements of greater relevance. When we climbed on the terrace, we noticed the oval-shaped staircase. This one draws a grave with the background carved with the fight between the Gods of the Olympus and Titãs, a prominent work of the Saxon sculptors Georg (1640 / 59-1700) and Paul Heermann (1673-1732). With its very similar design to the dynamic sculpture of Gianlorenzo Bernini in Rome, it has very few equivalents in the local sculpture. Its theme symbolizes the victory of the Christian troops against the Turkish army in Vienna in 1683.
