The place where it stands is a sand bank formed by the silting of the mouth of the river, fruit of the dynamics of the confluence of its waters with those of the Atlantic ocean, to the rhythm of the tides. Being the only one of the region with the surface above the line of tides throughout the year, it was the toponymy of head or dry head. The monkey toponymia can be attributed, among other versions, to French bougie (candle), due to the similarity of its circular structure and the primitive tower surmounted by a lighthouse, with a candle burning on its candlestick.
It is currently used as a beacon to support navigation.
