Rua do Ouro returns to the end of the 15th century, during the construction of the castle's new Gothic fortification, which covered a larger space than the old defense system and inside the court employees were installed in improvised shelters. Destroyed by a fire, these shelters were gradually replaced by small houses at the end of the 16th century, under the authorization of the emperor Rudolph II. From this time myths and legends date back to the alchemists who would have lived there: the imagination of later generations made this place the center of a mysterious and esoteric "magic prague". At the end of the eighteenth century, new inhabitants, mainly artisans and goldsmiths, settled to soon include the poorer sectors of the population. Several artists in search of inspiration resided in this place in the early twentieth century. The most famous of them was Franz Kafka, who lived in house # 22.
Today, small artisans and souvenir merchants occupy this place, which has its charm outside the places of great flow of tourists.
