Teatro alla Scala (or La Scala) in Milan is one of the most famous opera houses in the world.
The Teatro alla Scala was built by the determination of the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria to replace the Teatro Regio Ducale, destroyed by a fire in 1776, and named after the church of Santa Maria alla Scala that once stood on the site.
Work of the neoclassical architect Giuseppe Piermarini, it was inaugurated on August 3, 1778 with the opera of Antonio Salieri, L'Europa riconosciuta, with libretto by Mattia Verazi.
