The charm of the neighborhood of the Old Town lies in the organic and irregular character of its structure, inherited from the Middle Ages and that has formed over the years, responding to the needs of the time. This neighborhood invites us to stroll and get lost a bit through its narrow streets and passages, during a visit to the main monuments.
However, the official foundation of the city dates back to the 13th century, when it acquired the status of autonomous city and was built fortification that protects it. This fortification leaves out some areas that were already inhabited (such as the districts of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Adalbert, later incorporated into the Old City), but at the same time integrated several empty Terrans. It was right there, in the vicinity of the new church of San Havel and the squares of the carbon and fruit market (Uhelný trh, Ovocný trh), where the city began to have a more regular structure. The heart of the neighborhood, initially located in the current "small square" (malé náměstí), moved in time to the Old Town Square.
Even though the architecture of the neighborhood dates back to different times - the Baroque façades often hide Roman and Gothic walls and attics - the Old City preserves its medieval structure. However, it is important to remember the major urban interventions that took place during the second half of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century: this is the case of the paths that follow the Moldovan river piers between the Charles Bridge and the Legii Bridge (in the 1840), the tragic demolition of the Jewish ghetto and much of the Old City (around Kaprova and Platnérská streets). Fortunately, this demolition was limited and the city could be conserved, transforming the Old City into one of the most beautiful historical districts of all Europe.
What to see in Old Town?
- The main entrance of the Old Town: the gunpowder tower and the Municipal House.
- The rich and old commercial part of the city that is located around the Old Town Square: the old town hall, the two churches Our Lady of Týn and St. Nicolas, the "small square" (malé náměsti), the street Celetná, the courtyard of Ungelt, the Church of Santiago.
- The Jesuit comlex Clementinum and its surroundings: Marianské Square, Karlova Street, Crusaders' Square at the entrance of the Charles Bridge.
- The Santa Ana neighborhood: do not hesitate to get lost in the most authentic and best preserved place of the Old Town with its irregular layout of small streets, passages, courtyards and picturesque squares (Belém Square), where you will find beautiful palaces (Clam- Gallas) and churches (San -Gilles, Santa Cruz roundabout).
- The district of San Gall (Havelské město), from where it is possible to see the structure of the first new city of the thirteenth century in the vicinity of the old market spaces (Ovocný trh, Uhelný trh): the "Black Virgin" University of Carlos, the Theater of the States, the church of San Havel and its market.
- Around the Convent of Santa Ines: a neighborhood that was under threat of demolition at the beginning of the 20th century, but which fortunately was able to preserve its small and picturesque streets
