Piergiorgio Palace Hotel
At Sosua on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic.
Situated in this wonderful countryside, is the ideal place to relax, regenerate your batteries, forget every day stress and rebuild your strength for the future. The oceanfront Piergiorgio Palace Hotel **** is a Caribbean dream-vision, cliffside, above Sosua Bay.
A dream realized by Italian fashion designer, Piergiorgio, this white clapboard inn has a wrap-around verandah adorned with ornamental gingerbread, characteristic of Sosua’s glory days in the Victorian era. The front entrance replicates a gazebo and faces a dramatic marble staircase that ascends to the third-floor, Italianate penthouses with expansive sundecks.
Actually Sosua is divided into two separate villages which are separated by a bay at whose base is a sandy white beach more than half a mile long behind which are located a continuous row of small bars, restaurants and souvenir shops.
In addition to sunbathing, it is the scene of a variety of watersports such as sailing, waterskiing, jet-skiing, and just offshore a short distance there are banks of coral that are excellent for scuba diving.
Not far away to the east is another beach where the conditions are great for surfing (with just a board, without sail). Other beaches close by include Puerto Chiquito, Playa Chiquito and Playita.
To the east of the main beach lies Los Charamicós, formerly a sleepy fishing village but which has in recent years been converted into a business and residential sector for the concentration of Dominicans who have moved into the area to seek work in activities associated with the tourist industry. Most of the buildings in the centre are old and are typical of most Dominican villages, with crowded rambling streets and noisy moto-conchos running up and down the streets.
Practically all of the restaurants serve local dishes, and the ambiance is typically Dominican. In a few places excellent fish dishes are served.
It was founded in 1940 when the dictator Trujilo, seeking goodwill from the international community after having ordered the massacre of almost 20,000 Haitians in the country, offered to take in Jewish refugees from Germany who were being persecuted by the Nazis. About 600 of them immigrated, of whom only a small group eventually remained and became engaged in the dairy and smoked-meat industries. At Piergiorgio Palace Hotel you can do little or nothing at all. This Victorianesque inn is a tranquil oasis separated from its all-inclusive neighbors. Pick out a chaise lounge at the pool and lose yourself in a good book. Our Spa offers a variety of soothing and therapeutic massages,
from shiatsu to reflexology. Self-Indulge. Or you can get physical with the myriad water sports offered at Sosua Beach --snorkeling, straddling a banana boat or skiing behind a fast boat.
The town itself is delightful with a full complement of shops, Internet cafes, bars and restaurants from a schnitzel palace to a French bakery. Cabarete, a youthful town known in international windsurfing circles, is just ten minutes to the north. By night, its beachfront restaurants and clubs heat up to boiling!
Golfers can always be assured of a warm welcome at Piergiorgio’s. An 18-hole, Robert Trent Jones designed course is less than 30 minutes away, in the Playa Dorada Resort complex. It has some of the most reasonably priced greens fees in the country.
Similarly, the gorgeous Playa Grande Golf Course is a little more than 30 minutes to the north and it is even less expensive. Described as The Pebble Beach of the Caribbean, its 10 oceanfront holes overlook soaring cliffs and an idyllic cove. Our hotel is a nice place to come home to after a full day of Caribbean golf.
Piergiorgio Palace Hotel is located in the historic, seaside resort town of Sosua, just 15 minutes from the Gregorio Luperon International Airport in Puerto Plata.
