Plaza San Martín is one of the most representative public spaces in the city of Lima, Peru. It is located in block 9 of Colmena Avenue in the Historic Center of Lima within the area declared in 1988 by UNESCO as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It was built in homage to the liberated Don José de San Martín.
The old hospital of San Juan de Dios and, since 1850, a railway station had worked in the place where the square is currently located. The latter was demolished in 1910 to start the works of what would become one of the most important commemorative monuments of our independence: San Martín Square.

There is a detail, an anecdote, very well told by the tourist guides, and that is that in this square the effigy that carries the laurels of the Liberator San Martín is crowned by a camelid.
At first glance it may seem singular, it is the case that what is usually placed is a “votive” flame, which is an igneous flame that should represent the honor and eternal gratitude towards the Liberator.
Apparently, the artist confused and understood Llama “nativa”, because of this misinterpretation we have a curiosity in this well-known square.
