The Alqueva Dam is the largest Portuguese and Western European dam, situated on the Guadiana river in the interior Alentejo, near the village of Alqueva. The construction of this dam allowed the creation of the largest artificial water reservoir in Europe.
It has a height of 96 m above the foundation and a crowning length of 458. The installed capacity for electricity generation is 260 MW. The reservoir reaches, at its maximum level, 250 km², being the largest artificial lake in Europe.
It was built with the aim of irrigating the entire Alentejo area and producing electricity, in addition to other complementary activities.
