This "new" city gate was opened in 1512, at the time of Archbishop D. Diogo de Sousa.
The present construction dates from 1772, was designed by André Soares and ordered to be built by Archbishop D. Gaspar de Bragança.
The construction of this door marks the moment when the city left its walls and began to grow to its exterior.
Arco da Porta Nova is the gateway to the city of Braga, Portugal.
It was classified as a National Monument in 1910.
