Visiting Pernambuco during the 19th century, the then emperor of Brazil, Dom Pedro II, was impressed by the historical richness of the province and suggested that a space be opened for the dissemination of this material. As a result was founded in 1862 the Archaeological, Historical and Geographic Institute of Pernambuco, in charge of keeping alive the memory of the state.
Installed in the center of Recife since 1928, after having pilgrimaged through several headquarters, the Institute is divided into thematic spaces, such as the Libertarian Fighting Room, which has two panels depicting the Battle of Guararapes, as well as a collection of weapons. from the 17th to the 20th century. In the library is the edition (1647) of a book, written in Latin by the humanist Gaspar Barleus, depicting the eight-year rule of Count João Maurício de Nassau.
Visiting hours: Monday to Friday, from 13h to 17h; Saturday from 8am to 12pm
