Over the years, the fort has been progressively destroyed, mainly due to the action of the time and the waters of the sea in the living tides. Rebuilt in 1670, it was in 1755 struck by the great earthquake, having been deeply damaged.

Although in the summer months a fishing boat was built in front of Arrifana Beach, it was not until the reign of Philip III (1635) that a fort was built there to defend the fishermen, from the beach and inlet, being Governor and Captain- Mor of the Kingdom of the Algarve, D. Gonçalo Coutinho.
