La Casona de San Marcos houses the Cultural Center of the University. And this, in turn, houses the Museum of Art and History.
It was founded in 1919 by Dr. Julio C. Tello, the father of Peruvian archeology. His most important discovery was the ancient culture of Chavín de Huántar, whose collection is the most important in the museum.
The entity offers a collection of pictorial reproductions of great masters of painting from the 16th to the 20th centuries and a collection of popular art.
The latter brings together more than a thousand pieces from Ayacucho, Junín, Cusco and Puno. They are works by renowned artisans such as the altarpiece maker Joaquín López Antay, the image maker Hilario Mendívil and the potter Leoncio Tineo.

It also has an important collection consisting of 143 portraits of illustrious figures of the University from the 16th to the 20th century. A part is exhibited in the Permanent Exhibition Hall. To this group are added 16 canvases restored by the Peru-Spain agreement.
Among the San Marcos characters are rectors and professors who at the same time were members of the Holy Office, prominent jurists, government representatives and intellectuals from the colonial era.
It also has a temporary exhibition room for painting and sculpture.
