The process of occupation of the hills took place in Valparaíso once the space available in the plan was saturated. The first organic manifestation of this expansion can be located at the beginning of the 19th century. In the second decade, the English merchant William Bateman, acquired a site on the Alegre hill where he built a lonely house; His pioneering attitude found a quick echo among his compatriots who, attracted by the installation of the Republic, had settled in the port dedicating themselves to import and export activities. This group, socially and economically very well defined, settled on the Alegre hill, creating a residential neighborhood made up of houses with a higher level of construction than usual at the time. Around this newly comfortable architecture, a profuse arrangement of gardens was added that contributed to accentuate the picturesque aspect of this first residential group. The vivid color of both, architecture and nature, determined the name of Cerro Alegre that has identified it ever since.
This neighborhood, whose main axis is Montealegre Street, maintained these characteristics throughout the nineteenth century. In the 20th century, as a result of the 1906 earthquake, there was a noticeable change in the architecture of the hill. Most of the houses damaged by the earthquake were replaced by spacious single-family mansions that gave more homogeneity to the sector. The unity of expression is preserved to this day, although only on the exterior, since internally many residences have been subdivided. Escape to this destination the Baburizza Palace.

By bus
The trip takes 1 hour 45 minutes from Santiago. Existing departures with a frequency of 15 minutes, the bus companies offer a good level of service and comfort.
By car
For those who wish to arrive by car from Santiago, they should take Route 68, the estimated travel time being 1 hour and 30 minutes.
The colorful architecture and gardens gave it the name of Cerro Alegre.
