Old Jesuit college symbol of the Catholic reconquest, the Clementinum of Prague is a broad baroque set located in the heart of the Old Town. Around its four towers we find: the national library, two churches and three chapels, exhibition and concert halls, an astronomical tower.
Built on the site of an ancient Dominican monastery, the building is named after an ancient Roman shrine, the church of San Clemente.
Arriving in Prague in the middle of the sixteenth century, the Jesuits became a very powerful congregation shortly after the Battle of the White Mountain (1620), playing an important role during the "re-Catholization" of Bohemia. The college, as prestigious as the University of Prague, was one of the most important teaching centers of the city in the Baroque period, which was highly appreciated by noble families.
Its construction has continued for many decades since the mid-seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Illustrious architects such as Carlo Lurago or Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer devoted time to its construction.
After the prohibition of the Society of Jesus in 1773, the Clementinum remained a teaching center that also housed a press. At the same time, this enclosure was converted into the headquarters of several cultural institutions, among which it was worth mentioning the imperial library that later became national.
