The Pico Island Vineyard Culture Landscape is a UNESCO classified site since 2004, comprising an area of 987 hectares on the island of Pico, the second largest of the Azores archipelago.
The classified area is described as a Cultural Landscape, and includes a remarkable pattern of linear parallel walls perpendicular to the rocky coast line, where the vines are cultivated in black lava floor.
The walls were built to protect the thousands of small and contiguous rectangular plots (called corrals or curraletas) from the sea water and maritime wind but letting in the sun necessary for the ripening of the grapes.
The history of the Pico vineyards begins there far back, when the first settlers arrived in the Azores archipelago in 1427. In this volcano island, the land is hard, inhospitable, inculcable. But man does not allow himself to be overcome by nature, but rather makes him his ally in order to obtain the greatest benefit and sustenance. With ingenuity, he plants bachelors of vines in the crevices of the rocks. The grapes are of good quality, more had to be cultivated.
The work is hard, demanding: oxen cars dig paths in lava rock, the mark of the wheels stays there, to remember the persistence of the effort. Then, basalt walls are erected, all stacked by hand, not too high or too low ... high enough to protect the vineyard from the strong winds of the Atlantic and let the sun in. The volcanic stone retains the heat that at night releases, making the corrals a kind of greenhouse. This heat of the night, sweetens the verdelho, the wine that in the sixteenth century was served to nobles and czars.
