Founded in 1946 by Gerd Bucerius, after World War II with special permission from the Allies, Die Zeit was first published on February 21, 1946 with an initial circulation of 23,000 copies. It is published weekly by the publisher Zeitverlag Gerd Bucerius, which belongs since 1996 to the Georg von Holtzbrinck Editorial Group (Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck).

Die Zeit, based in Hamburg, has a weekly circulation of over 505,000 copies (2013). In 2007 the newspaper digitized its printed articles since 1946 and made them available for free on the web.
