In the Restoration Wars there was an obvious need to defend the Kingdom from the Spanish offensive, especially in border towns and cities.
It is in this context that several fortifications were built in these locations, notably in Estremoz. Not exactly a border village, it functioned as the 2nd line of defense of the territory, especially in logistical support (arms store, supplies and troops). It was D. João IV (r. 1640-1656), the first of the Bragança to reign in Portugal who in 1642 ordered João Pascácio Cosmander to design the future Estremocense abaluartada polygonal wall. This work would protect the village from hypothetical attacks and advances by Spanish troops, and the new bulwarks were adapted for heavy artillery battles.
The port of Évora is the outer entrance to the ancient neighborhood of Santiago, having as its most relevant element a drawbridge, and later reconstituted its functional elements and thick iron chains.
