It dates back to a fortification erected between 1587 and 1589, having been demolished in 1595, by determination of the Portuguese Crown. On its foundations, a new fortification was erected, whose layout is the present one.
The new structure was started in 1695, under the government of D. Estevão José da Costa, and was completed in the first decade of the eighteenth century, in D. João Fernandes de Almeida. Its function was to defend the southwestern tip of the entrance to the port of Mozambique, crossing fires with the Fortress of São Sebastião and Fortim de Santo António on the Island of Mozambique, for which it had twenty-two artillery pieces.
Polygonal plan with two bulwarks on the S-facing face, integrating central triangular square. Facades with exterior escarpment in slopes, in irregular stonework, crowned by cord and parapet with merlons and gunboats. The gate of arms is torn in the curtain facing S., between the bulwarks. Interior with vaulted outbuildings and flagstones, accessed by ramp from the small central square.
