Mission
Preserve, document and exhibit, for the purpose of preservation, education, tourism and entertainment, the collections of sacred and profane objects of the Venerable Order III of San Francisco, as well as witnessing to the saint's life through a permanent exhibition presenting the Christian principles that guided the life of the saint, his commitment to the poorest populations of society, as well as addressing cross-cutting themes such as youth and religion, the role of the elderly in maintaining Catholic traditions in today's society, social conflicts and religion in contemporary times, social exclusion. The aim of the Museum is an inclusive educative action that dignifies children, youth, adults and the elderly, promoting them in a spiritual and cultural dimension, as well as preserving the historical memory of Pernambuco with the arrival in the 17th century of the Order III Franciscan.
Founded by Brother Fernando Pio dos Santos, it is on the grounds of the Venerable Third Order of São Francisco do Recife, in a complex that houses the Santo Antônio Convent and Church and the famous Golden Chapel that has been listed since November 30, 1937. The museum has a varied collection that includes liturgical vestments, carved furniture, cultured pieces of precious metal such as monstrances, thurles, torches and candelabra, baroque statuary and other objects.
Among his most important pieces are the first image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Pernambuco, brought by Father Gabriel Malagrida; an image of Our Lady of the Good Counsel who was in the oratory of the Recife Faculty of Law; one of Our Lady of the Conception by João Pereira, who was very venerated while in the missing church of Madre de Deus; a series of images of the Ashes Procession from Lisbon in 1709; a carved and gilded altar from 1804, with images of St. Francis of Chagas bearing the stigmata of Jesus Christ; a Our Lady of Mercy, a 1751 Crucifix and a glorious Christ.
