It is the main seat of the Peruvian Executive Power and is the residence of the President of the Republic of Peru. It comprises a built area of 19,200 square meters. About 200 people work there. The left wing of the building (the one facing Calle Pescadería) designed by the Polish architect Ricardo de Jaxa Malachowski in 1926 was occupied by the Ministry of Justice until the second government of the Architect Fernando Belaúnde Terry. The current building, which is certainly not what Pizarro imagined, dates from 1938, but a fig tree sprouts from one of its patios, which legend has attributed to more than four and a half centuries of life. It is considered a historical monument and in its different architectural versions it has hosted certainly illustrious guests. From Francisco Pizarro, its founder, and the liberator Simón Bolívar, to the King of Spain, Juan Carlos I de Borbón, on the official visit he made to Peru in November 1978, without counting the 40 viceroys, 53 caudillos and presidents already Leon Escobar. To Fernando Belaúnde, it seemed "quite French-style but comfortable."
The Government Palace of Peru, also known as Government House (name with which official documents are dated) and by the Peruvian press as Casa de Pizarro (informally), is located in the Plaza Mayor of the city of Lima. banks of the Rímac River (the exact place indicated by the Spanish as the seat of power since 1535).
The current Honor Guards of the Government Palace belong to the ´´Glorioso Húsares de Junín N ° 1´´ Libertador del Perú Cavalry Regiment, created by José de San Martín and since 1987 it is the Escort of the President of the Republic. Every day at 12:00 hours he performs the ´´change of guard´´.
