Almuñecar
Almuñécar is a municipality of the Spanish Autonomous Region of Andalusia, on the Costa Tropical between Nerja (Malaga) and Motril.
Since 1975, the city has become one of the most important tourist cities in the province of Granada and the Tropical Coast.
The coat of arms of Almuñécar, which shows the heads with turbans of three Berber pirates floating in the sea, was granted to the city by King Charles I in 1526 for having destroyed a Berber invasion force.
Tourism
Almuñécar is considered as one of the most attractive spots for tourists and with more future on the Andalusian coast. It is not in vain that its coast is known with the brand of Costa Tropical, a name that fits with its extensive beaches, its climatic conditions and its exuberant tropical and subtropical vegetation. A unique combination, not only in the Iberian Peninsula, but throughout the European continent.

The city is located in the heart of the Costa Tropical, near the province of Malaga, which has 19 km of coastline, divided into 26 beaches and its temperatures do not go below 16 degrees in winter and do not go over 35 degrees in the summer. Among its beaches the visitor can find several floods of visitors and services, lonely remote coves and even one where it is possible to practice naturism. The offer of activities related to the sea is immense, from courses of diving, sailing, windsurfing and canoeing to the rental of bicycles or water excursions. It also has a marina with boat mooring services and rental boats.

For fans of nature, Almuñécar also has a large number of attractive spots. One of them is the Peña Escrita Ecological Complex, located in a natural viewpoint at 1,100 meters of altitude, from where it is possible to contemplate the peaks of the Sierra Nevada, the landscape of the Alpujarras and the fusion of the tropical valley with the Mediterranean sea.

There is also a reserve of animals in this site of municipal initiative, which has been developed in a safe, quiet and engaging way, an ideal place for practicing all types of outdoor sports such as trekking, mountain biking or paragliding.

The traditional celebrations of Almuñécar are colorful and varied, like the carnivals, with the traditional burial of the sardine. Among the numerous festive events that the population celebrates, it is worth mentioning a celebration in honor of the Virgin of the Antigua. In this event the neighbors celebrate simultaneously the victory of Lope de Valenzuela in the Moorish Aben Aboo that took place in 1569, at the same time that they thank the miraculous intercession of its patron. The procession, which is celebrated at night and in the sea, reaches the beach a large number of ships accompany the Virgin on this route that ends with extraordinary fireworks in the Peñones del Santo.
Gastronomy
The gastronomy of Almuñécar is based on ancient traditions, in many cases, of Arab origin.
The sea is, alongside agriculture, the source of resources for the elaboration of exquisite dishes. Seafood, fish, and other species provide magnificent barbecues and are basic elements of soups and rice. As typical dishes are: migas with melon, pumpkin with sausage, zarzuela of fish and, among the desserts, mousse of graviola or the mango cakes.
The exceptional climate allows from a century ago, the cultivation and commercialization of tropical fruits like graviola, mango, avocado, papaya, babaco or carambola.
Weather
Almuñécar being part of the Region of Granada, the climate is friendly and dry, the air clean and healthy, with clear and cheerful sky. Heavy winds, fog and snow are rare.
The region of Granada offers Spain's richest variety of climate and landscape, from the alpine vegetation of the Sierra Nevada to the tropical coastline of Motril, where the average winter temperatures 15ºC, while some villages of the Sierra with -10ºC.
