Salou
Salou is a municipality in the district of Tarragonès in the province of Tarragona in Catalonia, Spain, being about 10 km from Tarragona and Reus on the Costa Daurada and 112 km from Barcelona.
Salou is located in the shelter of Cabo de Salou, a few kilometers from the city of Tarragona. This city, which has emerged as a small center of commerce and fishing, has a tradition of more than a hundred years of tourism thanks to its good climate and a coast with transparent waters.
Tourism
Salou is a beautiful seaside resort and tourist center of Catalonia. Apart from its sequence of beaches interspersed by rocky corners, and its landscaped passageway, one of its main attractions is the Port Aventura complex, with its famous Dragon Khan, a roller coaster. The extensive coastline, protected by Cabo Salou, beaches and coves with fine sand, enjoying a Mediterranean climate and offering unlimited opportunities to savor the sea and all kinds of water sports.
The long Paseo de Les Palmeres is one of the most representative places of this city, where relaxation and entertainment are guaranteed. All this, along with the local cuisine, based on excellent seafood that has fueled a tradition of tourism, thanks to its good weather and a coastline with transparent waters.
The Paseo de Les Palmeres, parallel to Levante beach, is the main street of the city. This long avenue, the main meeting point of the city's residents, as well as for foreigners, brings together some of the important tourist complexes. Throughout this busy passage, by beautiful examples of modernist architecture attract attention, as well as the tower of Cal Bonet, and the monument erected in memory of King Jaime I.
When night falls, Salou concentrates the hectic nightlife and around this point, divided among its numerous courtyards, bars, nightclubs and restaurants.
The location of Salou invites you to visit several places, both on the coast of the province and inland. Several kilometers to the east, Tarragona has an important legacy of monuments between extensive beaches. Its Roman archeology remains, declared a World Heritage Site, are one of the points of interest of the province's capital.
Also on the coast cities such as Calafell, Torredembarra or Cambrils, combine historic buildings with excellent tourist facilities.
Inside, the province has the important monumental site formed by the modernist buildings of the Plaza de Prim and the Casa Navàs in Reus. Meanwhile, the Cistercian monastery of route, takes the visitor to know the monasteries of Santes Creus and Poblet, in the province of Tarragona, the last declared World Heritage by UNESCO.
At the southern end of the province is the Ebro Delta Natural Park, a protected area considered one of the most important wetlands in the Iberian Peninsula.
Gastronomy
The stars of the local cuisine are the excellent fish and seafood from the coast. Thus, the crustaceans of Cambrils and the crayfish of San Carlos de la Rápita enjoy the fame and recognition of the Romesco sauce (made with dried red peppers, tomato and almonds) that serves to accompany both the vegetables of the interior and fish.
Other of the most important ingredients of traditional dishes are still rice and seafood. Local culinary experts know perfectly how to cook meat dishes and varied salads with fresh vegetables and cheese.
Those tourists who prefer meat dishes should try pork sausages named mongetes and botifarra. The sausages are fried in hot oil and served with a rich vegetable.
Meanwhile, extensive vineyards of the province give rise to five interesting denominations of origin: Tarragona, Conca de Barberá, Penedés, Priorato and Terra Alta.
