Maceió
Maceió is the capital and largest city of the coastal state of Alagoas, Brazil. The name "maceió" is of Indian origin, and designates the naturally spontaneous courses of water flowing out of the soil. Most maceios run into the sea, but some get trapped and lakes form.
There are an abundance of maceios and lakes in this part of Brazil, because of this, the city was named Maceió, and the State, Alagoas. The new Zumbi dos Palmares Maceió International Airport connects with many Brazilian cities and also operates some international flights. The city is home to the Federal University of Alagoas.
Tourism
The state capital of Alagoas has wonderful beaches, and the color of the sea varies from emerald green to blue, but the water is always clear.
The sand is white and there are a large number of coconut plantations. This natural beauty blends in with its urban coastline, with immense hotels, restaurants and bars, creating an inviting setting that attracts Brazilian and foreign tourists throughout the year.
The sea of ​​Maceió has natural pools and reefs a few meters from the coast, with access by boat.
Lake Mundaú is another option for lovers of sailing and bathing in clear water. At night, the beach of Pajuçara and Jaragua are filled with people, because their old warehouses have been transformed into bars.
To the north, the beaches are quieter, like Cruz das Almas and Jacarecica, with good waves for surfing.
Garça Torta and Pratagi, two of the most beautiful beaches of the northeast coast, has green and calm waters.
From the urban beaches, many rafts depart (small boarding used by fishermen) that take the tourists to the natural pools formed at low tide. The trip takes about half an hour. It is a great program for people who like to bathe in a transparent sea with warm water. There are also tours for those who enjoy diving near the reefs.
Some ferries have been converted into bars where the tourist can enjoy a typical meal. Six kilometers from Maceió is the beach of Jatiúca, a paradise for surfers and well served with inns and hotels.
Maceió is also known for its artisan lace, whose lace work can be purchased at Portal da Barra, directly from the artisans.
Gastronomy
Fish, shrimps, crabs and lobsters are some of the specialties of Maceió. In beachfront bars or restaurants in well equipped, the seafood is always served very fresh, prepared from local recipes.
A kind of mollusk, the sururu, is much appreciated in the city and is part of a series of typical dishes.
