Puerto Madryn
Puerto Madryn is a city in the province of Chubut, in the Argentinian Patagonia. Where the cold is less intense, hotel prices are relatively cheaper and it is closer to Buenos Aires, with flights taking approximately 1h50m.
Puerto Madryn is protected by Golfo Novo, which is formed by Peninsula Valdés and Punta Ninfas. It is an important center for tourists visiting the natural attractions of the Valdes Peninsula and the coast.
A new shopping center in the city center has helped tourism significantly, making Puerto Madryn a more attractive place for national and international tourists visiting Patagonia. It is twinned with Nefyn, a small town on the Llyn peninsula in North Wales, as a result of its longstanding connection with Welsh culture since the Welsh colonization of Argentina.
Tourism
Puerto Madryn has an incredible combination of resorts, landscapes and deserts. A magical place where it is possible to enjoy fauna contemplation: like the impressive southern right whale.
Its coasts are bathed by the waters of the Golfo Nuevo, where penguins of magalhãnicos and the lions of the sea coexist. It has about 30 km of beaches, soft sands and cliffs, where you can enjoy beautiful scenery.
Some places that have to be visited in Puerto Madryn are: the Valdés Peninsula, declared a World Heritage Site, where you can observe free whales from June to November. Punta Loma, home of the sea lions, and Punta Tombo, the home of Magellanic penguins.
This area also has a diversity of flora, which is possible to discover in the Botanic Garden of Patagonia Extrandina, observing different types of tea and different species mountain range.
It also has beautiful resorts with warm waters and water sports. For this reason, Puerto Madryn is known as "The Capital of Diving". It is also the area with the greatest contact with the type of terrain in the country.
Weather
The general climate aspects of the Valdés Peninsula are the same as those that characterize the climate of the northern region of Patagonia, modified locally by the interactions between the atmosphere and adjacent bodies of water.
The prevailing winds in Patagonia are those of the West, and Puerto Madryn is affected by the Southwest wind, which is completely exposed by its geographic location. During the winter, the Northwest winds are the wettest since the anticyclone lies on the Atlantic Ocean. During the summer, the North winds have a more continental influence since the anticyclone is more to the West and, with this, they are drier.
The seasonal variation of precipitation is small, although it has a peak in the April-June quarter and is distributed evenly in the other quarters with approximately 50 mm in each of them.
Like most of the Patagonian territory, the region is influenced by a Pacific rainy season and has a low rainfall index. The humid air of the west is intercepted by the Andes Mountain Range, which acts to retain moisture. The mean annual precipitation decreases towards the interior of the Peninsula, varying from 225 mm in the periphery to 200 mm in the central zone. According to CENPAT records for the period 1982-2001, the annual average value of precipitation is 235.9 mm, which means an increase of 36% throughout the 20th century.
Gastronomy
The cuisine of Puerto Madryn is divided into two strengths: seafood and meat. There is a range of options ranging from oysters, shrimps and fish to barbecued lamb, chicken and the traditional Argentine barbecue with chorizo.
In most of the city's restaurants a full menu with starter, main course and dessert.
From the starters, you can choose between lettuce or bruschetta salad. The paella, served with prawns, lobsters and seafood. Another dish much appreciated is the chicken with pumpkin puree. The dessert is usually ice cream.
