Informações gerais acerca de PUNAAUIA
Punaauia is a commune in the suburbs of Papeete in French Polynesia, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean. Punaauia is located on the island of Tahiti, in the administrative subdivision of the Windward Islands, themselves part of the Society Islands. In the late 1890s, the French painter Paul Gauguin lived in Punaauia. Here he painted his masterpiece, Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?. The commune borders Faaa on the north and Paea on the south

Defined by luxury resorts and cultural showpieces, Punaauia is part of Tahiti Island having that certain raw quality to it. The small population and the rich natural resources draw year-round leisure travelers to soak up on Punaauia’s beauty. The city maintains its lazy atmosphere, despite the fact that tourism in Tahiti has grown quite extensively over the last several years.

Best beaches of Tahiti
The whole island has different types of beaches for the intrepid tourist. The north and south coast feature the most famous black sand beaches in the world. Tahiti is well-known for these dark-colored sandy beaches. Out on the west coast, south of the capital Papeete, the nicest beach is in Punaauia due to its light-colored sand. That explains why one of the renowned hotel chains in the world chose this area to establish their luxury resort. Not to worry though, there are budget-friendly accommodations within the small city as well.

Sights to behold
Punaauia is the home of the Black Pearl Museum, which showcases one of Tahiti’s famous features. Black pearls are abundant in the island and through the museum, you can have an idea how these unique pearls are made into fine accessories. Another important museum in Punaauia is Paul Gauguin’s Museum, offering a delightful range of the master’s works. Located inside the Harrison Smith Botanical Gardens, the museum features Gauguin memorabilia and reproductions of his famed paintings. Punaauia also provides a better look into Tahiti’s treasured historical artifacts housed inside The Museum of Tahiti and Her Islands, considered as one of the best cultural centers in the South Pacific.

Magical landscape
The rest of Tahiti Island remains as a goldmine of discoveries. Explore beyond Punaauia to explore the volcanic peaks, the markets of capital Papeete, waterfalls, valleys and the crystal-clear lagoons. Sights in the capital are another treat for the eyes. Lastly, if you’re craving for cultural entertainment, be sure to visit the island in July when it celebrates Helva Nul Festival. It’s the ideal shopping haunt while you’re visiting Punaauia.

Mountain bananas, smoked breadfruit, a tropical fruit pudding called poe, a marinated fish dish named poisson cru, and suckling pig served with spinach are the most commonly served Tahitian dishes. Most of Papeete’s international restaurants specialize in French, Chinese, or Italian cuisine. All of the above cuisines are also served at the wheeled snack shops, called roulottes, along Papeete’s waterfront. Roulotte meals are also cheaper, but no less delicious, than those served in more formal restaurants. Freshly baked baguettes are also affordable as well as stuffed with nearly every other food imaginable. Most Tahitians believe tipping is contrary to their traditional definition of hospitality, which is best displayed at a large traditional tamara’a Tahiti feast cooked over hot rock layers in an underground oven. The juice from Tahiti’s noni tree is best known for its ability to improve health, while Hinano is the most common local beer.
