Presentation
Nuuk is the capital and largest city of Greenland and the Arctic's main commercial, industrial, administrative and transport hub. Touristic destination for excursions that allow you to explore the Arctic nature, whale watching, a sleigh ride by Arctic dogs and henas, and glacier exploration. Other tourist attractions include the National Archives Museum, which features collections of rare Nordic and Inuit archaeological artifacts, and the Katuaq Cultural Center, which offers a display of contemporary Greenlandic music and art.
Greenland's largest city and capital is fueled by fresh air, strong coffee and diverse personalities.
It is a city of vitality, surrounded by nature and filled with vibrant Greenlanders who lead fascinating lives of ancient traditions, modern twists and diverse influences.
Home to gourmet restaurants, fashion boutiques and the Northern Lights-inspired Katuaq Cultural Center, Nuuk is the center of modern Greenland. A stroll through picturesque Old Harbor shows that history and traditions remain strong in this growing city.
Tourist points
Nuuk is the center of modern Greenland and home to gourmet restaurants, fashion boutiques and the aurora borealis-inspired Katuaq Cultural Center. Taking a stroll through picturesque Old Port shows that history and traditions remain strong in this growing city. Nuuk is full of experiences not found anywhere else in Greenland. Marvel at mummies at the Greenland National Museum. Try the local craft beer tasting at Greenland's largest microbrewery. Learn more about urban arctic life and the move towards Greenland independence with a visit to the city and parliament. Evaluate new and old expressions of Inuit culture at the Nuuk Art Museum. Play as a college student at Greenland University and see students preparing as Greenland's future leaders.
Stroll down the pedestrian "pedestrian mall" downtown to see shop windows, boutiques, souvenir shops and Nuuk Center. Relax with a strong cup of coffee (and the obligatory piece of cake) in one of the city's many bustling cafes. And make reservations at one of Nuuk's fine restaurants, where the only thing that rivals the intense flavors of Greenland delicacies is the chef's artistic presentation.
You can rent a bike and cycle around the city.
The Nuuk Fjord is sometimes overlooked in favor of its colder northern neighbors, but this intricate water system is the second largest in the world, filled with open coves and islands for boat or kayak exploration. Along the way, the refreshing waterfalls and likely views of faithful humpback whales keep your eyes and cameras entertained.
Loneliness and scenery provide the perfect setting for hiking, outdoor fishing, hunting or kayaking. The deep waters of the fjord are full of cod and red fish, delivering a reward for fishing and food. Like a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, the Narsap Sermia glacier flows directly into the fjord that fills the headwaters of the most sought after icebergs.
Nuuk is a vibrant city full of contrasts - traditions merge with modern Greenland, nature and the city are intertwined and people are local and international.
How to get
Commercial airlines are the only way for travelers to Greenland, served by airports in Denmark and Iceland, unless they arrive with a cruise ship.
Gastronomy
Nuuk's gastronomic setting is the most diverse in the country, a true melting pot of original Greenlandic character with a renewed global influence. The basic ingredients consist of fish and poultry, game (walruses, reindeer, seals, whales, etc.) and wild fruits. Vegetables and fruits are imported.
