Guaruja
Guarujá is a city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, located on the island of Santo Amaro, was visited for the first time on January 22, 1502 by the Portuguese explorers André Gonçalves, Américo Vespúcio and their armadas. More precisely, this visit took place in the western part of the island, now known as Santa Cruz dos Navegantes Beach.
However, due to the topography, indigenous hostility and marshy areas the city remained abandoned for more than 300 years. Having only the extraction of whale oil, fishing and few sugar mills as economic activity.
Over time, people who lived from this economy were forming a small settlement, so, by an imperial decree of 1832, Guarujá became a village.
In 1893, Guarujá was promoted to Vila Balneária de Guarujá. A hotel, a church, a casino and 46 demountable residential chalets were ordered from the United States. In addition to receiving water, sewage and electricity services.
On June 30, 1934, the city received the title of Spa Resort and in 1947 it was considered a municipality due to its continuous growth.
