Plazuela de la Independencia, an urban space with clear Hispanic influences, built to commemorate the triumph of the Chachapoyan independentists over the royalist hosts (viceregal army), in the battle of Higos Urco.

The action took place on June 6, 1821. The fight was bloody, terrible, heroic and unequal in the pampas of Higos Urco (two kilometers from the city). The royalists had experience, order, and discipline; the patriots covered their lack of preparation with the bravery and courage, typical of their libertarian ideals.

With these weapons they achieved victory on that historic day that left several names to remember, especially that of Matea Rimachi, a fierce fighter who represents the courage and heroism of Amazonian women to this day.

It is located in block 3 of Jirón Amazonas, Chachapoyas.

In honor of those fighters, the monument to the Chachapoyan Patriots was erected in the center of the Independence Square.
