Inside the square is the Recoleta Cemetery and the Recoleta Cultural Center between Junín, Vicente López, Azcuénaga streets, Pueyrredón avenue and Libertador avenue.
In the middle of the 60s, a small group of young musicians and artists, who would later give rise to Argentine rock, began to meet in the square, after leaving La Cueva, a precarious musical venue located nearby (Pueyrredón 1723), to dawn playing rock and roll. Some of those artists were: Litto Nebbia, Ciro Fogliatta, Carlos Mellino, Alejandro Medina, Javier Martínez, Pajarito Zaguri, Mauricio Birabent (later known as Moris), Francis Smith, Miguel Abuelo, Tanguito, Pappo, Oscar Moro and the journalists and poets founders of Argentine rock Pipo Lernoud and Miguel Grinberg.
This environment led to the young people who adhered to the new ethical and aesthetic values related to rock, the sexual revolution, the hippie movement and flower power that characterized the youth counterculture of the second half of the decade of the Plaza Francia. 60s and early 70s.
As part of this countercultural movement, an increasingly large group of young artisans began to exhibit and sell handicrafts. The massive acceptance of these products by the people and families who walked around the square on weekends, led to the expansion of the artisanal ´´puestos´´ until forming what ended up being known as the “hippie fair of Plaza Francia”. for the belonging to this movement of the majority of its members.
Currently, the Government of the City of Buenos Aires has reorganized the fair, recovering artisans whose work is original and disaffected those who did not have a high artistic level or who resold third-party products. The artisans nucleated in the Interferias organization must go through an evaluation and registration process to be approved as such.
The artisans located in the upper part of the Plaza Intendente Alvear, bordering the Paseo Chabuca Granda, are regularized and controlled by the Directorate of Defense and Consumer Protection and their technical name is ´´manualistas´´, being ´´artesanos´´ the specific name of the exhibitors located in the lower part of the Plaza property, dependent on the Culture area of the Buenos Aires government.
The upper part of Plaza Intendente Alvear was successively concessioned to two public welfare entities, Fundación Porteña and Fundación Hospital Argerich; After these processes, the vendors achieved their self-management through a guarantee given by the City Government. In both sections of the fair, you can find all kinds of handicrafts and crafts, many of them of the highest quality; vitrofusion, leather, book restoration, manufacture of sandals and espadrilles, carved mattes, ethnic jewelry, incense, essences, designer handbags, artistic candles, musical instruments of native peoples, photography and many more products.
Plaza Intendente Alvear, erroneous but commonly known as ´´Plaza Francia´´, is a traditional square in the Recoleta neighborhood in the city of Buenos Aires in Argentina.
The square is located in one of the areas with the highest purchasing power in the city.
