Het bevindt zich op een dominante positie boven het dorp, bij de noordoostelijke helling van de Ossa-bergketen, op een heuvel die op natuurlijke wijze wordt verdedigd door de Ficalho-stroom en door de Carrascal-stroom, kleinere zijrivieren van de rivier Guadiana.
Het middeleeuwse kasteel heeft een vierkant plan, met muren van ongeveer zestig meter aan de zijkant, versterkt in de hoeken van het westen en het oosten door grote ronde torens. Het noordwestelijke gezicht en een deel van het noordoosten waren gewoon in het dorp. In het interieur werd de moederkerk opgericht, de zetel van de eerste parochie van de stad, en vandaag is dit het belangrijkste heiligdom van OLVrouw van de conceptie van Vila Viçosa, uitgeroepen patrones van Portugal in 1646.
Het is geclassificeerd als Nationaal Monument bij Decreet gepubliceerd op 23 juni 1910.
