The monument is part of the so-called Johannine Baroque, and is inspired by the Spanish and Filipino model of S. Lourenço do Escurial, in a harmonious articulation of three distinct components: royal palace, convent and church.
In the northern part of this monument we can find the Collection of Sacred Art which has objects such as reliquaries and lamps, besides the sculptures models of the School of Sculpture of Mafra.
The entrance to this amazing collection of sacred art is the entrance to the Royal Palace.
Built by King João V in 1711, it is the most sumptuous Portuguese baroque convent and monument. It is the paradigm of the richest kingdom in the history of Portugal, thanks to the gold coming from Brazil.
