The castle is now part of the Natural Park of Serra de São Mamede, where it stands on the north side of the mountain range, in a dominant position over the village and strategic on the border line, controlling, in the past, the passage of the river tributary Sever of the Tagus River. This fact secured the attention of several monarchs, expressed in several campaigns of remodeling, that gave the monument its present appearance.
Inscribed in a region of great natural diversity, where a great variety of rare and endangered species is found, the castle was known as Eagle's Nest due to this species that once nested at its top.
At the time of the Inquisition, like Castelo de Vide, Marvão was used as a place of refuge by the Spanish Jews, the so-called Sephardim.
