The Brazilian Museum of Sculpture (MuBE) is a private cultural institution located in Jardim Europa, city of São Paulo. It was opened in May 1995, with the aim of publicizing the most diverse segments of art, prioritizing sculpture and three-dimensional supports. Its headquarters building, one of the best known works of architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha, is a semi-underground building integrated with a garden designed by Burle Marx.
The museum emerged as a result of the mobilization of an association of residents of the neighborhood, to prevent the construction of a shopping mall on site. The land was loaned by the city of São Paulo to the Society of Friends of Museums (SAM), the institution's maintainer, for a period of 99 years. In 2007, he was at the center of a lawsuit involving the city and SAM, accused of misuse of space.
The Brazilian Museum of Sculpture has its origin in a joint mobilization undertaken by the Society of Friends of Garden Europe (SAJEP) and the Society of Friends of Museums (SAM), under the coordination of artist Marilisa Rathsam, to prevent the construction of a shopping mall. on a 7,000-square-meter plot of land located on Avenida Europa, which would allegedly interfere with the tranquility of the neighborhood's residents.5 In 1987, during the administration of Jânio Quadros, the city of São Paulo granted the Society of Friends of Museums, under the regime of lending, the use of the land for a period of 99 years, with the consideration that it was intended for the construction of cultural equipment open to the community.
The construction of the museum took eight years and was largely funded by donations from the private sector. Opened in May 1995, with a display of 140 works by Victor Brecheret, the museum has since been managed as an exhibition space dedicated to various demonstrations, without the worry of forming or maintaining a permanent collection of works of art.
In November 2010 the museum launched the MuBE Virtual project, a collaborative digital collection on national sculptural production. In August 2011 hosted the exhibition of artist Steven Klein called USAnatomy, with rehearsals of famous as Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
