The Museum for East Asian Art in Cologne is based on East Asian art knowledge. It goes back to the collection of Adolf Fischer (1856 to 1914), who settled in Berlin as a private scholar of ethnology after personal activities and long journeys.

In 1913 Fischer's collection found a new home in Cologne. They were made in the old building of the Kunstgewerbemuseum am Hansaringrechte, where the old Museum of Applied Arts and the Museum Schnütgen also hold their collections. The aim of the museum was to show all of East Asian art in a closed form. In 1944 the museum building at Hansaring was damaged and the war collection was for the time without a fixed exhibition location. In 1977, according to the plans of the Japanese Kunio Maekawa, a new construction train was built at the Aachener Weiher, which still houses the collection today. The outdoor area, the smaller Japanese garden with rocks and water, was closed against artist Masayuki Nagare (* 1923), under personally with the stone sculpture The Flag in the Wind from 1980. From 1966 to 1989 Roger Goepper was director of the museum, he was promoted in 1991 Sinologist Adele Schlombs.

The museum will remain closed until mid-May 2014 for renovation and renovation work. The cafeteria and museum shop will be retained.
