Of urban implantation, its construction began in Century XV, with traces of unknown author.
It presents characteristics of medieval architecture, Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance and romantic. It is considered an example of organic architecture, a set of apparently separate bodies, but which are part of an articulated whole, through courtyards, stairs, corridors and galleries.
It was one of the Royal Palaces and is now owned by the Portuguese State, which uses it for tourism and cultural purposes.
The palace has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.
