The Natural Monument is located on an extensive highland between 3,400 and 3,800 meters above sea level, which overlooks the name of Puna. These plains or pockets, which were separated by parallel mountainous ropes oriented from north to south, lacked the sea. Due to it, the water of the scarce floods or the snow falling in the region, accumulates in the central depressions of the pocket, forming large and deep lagoons.



Such is the case of Laguna de los Pozuelos, which is approximately 25 km wide and 9 km long. The extreme aridity of the environment, its poor conditions and the harshness of the climate, conditioning the development of plant and animal life. For certain species present particular adaptations to these environments, thus converting themselves into a region.



It is not casual, then, that in Puna we will have numerous endemic species, different from those present in other regions of the country. Its main attraction is the large variety of aquatic birds, which are unique to their surroundings.



The most striking are the Flamencos, of which three species are present. Accompanying Gallaretas and Ducks. On the surrounding land are herds of Vicuñas, the South American camelid of valuable wool, next to groups of Ñandúes Petisos Suris Cordilleranos.



It is located in the north of the province of Jujuy, between the towns of Rinconada, Lagunillas, Yoscaba, Cieneguillas and Pozuelos. It covers part of the Dptos. Rinconada, Yavi and Santa Catalina.



Protect the Pozuelos Lagoon along with its aquatic bird life, which is largely comprised of species unique to the Puna environment. Due to its relevance as habitat for numerous aquatic birds, it has been included in the list of humidales of international importance.
