Our Lady of Loreto is the most important place of pilgrimage in Bohemia. The sanctuary is around the Santa Casa, faithful copy of the Italian model, which houses numerous artistic riches.
The model of the Holy House comes from Italy: in the city of Loreto is the original of the modest house of the Virgin of Nazareth, brought from the Holy Land in the thirteenth century for its protection. The Italian shrine - a place of Marian devotion since the Middle Ages - was the subject of numerous copies in Europe, among which stands out Our Lady of Loreto in Prague. This was built between 1626 and 1631 as a request of Baroness Bénigne-Catherine de Lobkowitz, and had a great popular success during the Baroque period. The sanctuary is currently run by the Capuchin monks.
As in the Italian model, the Holy House of Prague offers a contrast between a modest brick interior and a very luxurious exterior decoration with stucco reliefs depicting scenes from the virgin's life.
Around this place of devotion there is a courtyard built in the mid-18th century by the architects Christoph and Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer: they are also the authors of the main façade and the church of the Nativity, sumptuously decorated.
The sanctuary of Loreto also houses a rich treasure of sacred art, product of the donation of several people to the community: ostensories, chalice, crucifixes, crowns.
The fame of Our Lady of Loreto comes from its treasure and its chime, whose 30 bells give rhythm to the daily life to the sound of an old hymn dedicated to the Virgin.
Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 12.15 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.
