The Pantheon of the Fatherland and Liberty Tancredo Neves was inaugurated on September 7, 1986, sponsored by Fundação Bradesco and donated to the Brazilian government under José Sarney. As it is not a mausoleum, the correct term for the monument should be "cenotaph", meaning a funeral memorial erected to honor some person or group of people whose remains are in another location or are in an unknown location.

It is located in the Praça dos Três Poderes, in Brasília. Created by Oscar Niemeyer, it features modernist architecture symbolizing a dove. It has three floors, adding up to a total built area of 2 105 m². Its cornerstone was laid by the President of France, François Mitterrand, on October 15, 1985.

The exhibition area, entirely dedicated to Tancredo Neves, was reopened in 2013. The new design, curated by Marcello Dantas and Silvia Albertini, privileges direct public contact with the subjects covered, through the exhibition of copies of documents, films by Silvio Tendler and interactive technologies.

Its purpose is to honor all those who stood out in favor of the Brazilian homeland. Its conception took place during the national commotion caused by the death of Tancredo Neves, the first democratically elected Brazilian president - albeit indirectly - after twenty years of military rule, in 1984.

The names of the honorees appear in the "Book of Steel", also called "Book of Heroes of the Fatherland", which gives them the status of "national hero". The tome is located on the third floor, between the Panel of Inconfidence, a sculpture in honor of the martyrs of the 19th-century mining uprising and the stained glass of Marianne Peretti. Every time a new name is engraved on its metal pages along with its respective biography, an ceremony in memoriam to the honoree is performed.

The Pantheon of the Fatherland and Liberty Tancredo Neves, in the Praça dos Três Poderes, in Brasília, was designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer in 1985.

Its cornerstone was laid by the President of France, François Mitterrand, on October 15, 1985 and the Pantheon was opened on September 7, 1986.

The Pantheon has three floors, adding up to a total built area of 2 105 m². Inside, in the Red room, there is the mural of Liberdade, by the artist Athos Bulcão.

On the third floor, there is the stained glass window by Marianne Peretti (also the author of the stained glass windows of the Cathedral of Nossa Senhora Aparecida).

On the outside, on top of a diagonal tower, the eternal flame burns. A small flame, representing the freedom of the people and the independence of the country.

The Pantheon was listed in 2007 by IPHAN, along with 34 other works by Oscar Niemeyer, who turned 100 years old.
