The Maquiné Cave was discovered in 1825, by the farmer Joaquim Maria Maquiné, owner of the land at that time. It was scientifically explored in 1834 by the Danish naturalist Dr. Peter Wilhelm Lund, who then showed the world the natural beauty of rare beauty. It was in Lapa Nova de Maquiné that Peter Lund discovered fossil bones for the first time, where Similodon Populator (saber-toothed tiger) and Nortrotherium Magnuinense (giant sloth) stand out. With seven rooms explored, totaling 650 linear meters and a difference of only 18 meters. The preparation of lighting and catwalks allows visitors to glimpse the wonders of the cave through a route accompanied entirely by a local guide. The Grotto of Maquiné is directly responsible for its genesis and evolution the action of the waters on the limestone rock, which wears away. As the rock dissolves, underground galleries called caves are formed. Full of natural ornaments, it presents one of the most beautiful collections of speleothems, forms resulting from the deposition of calcite. The main speleothems found are stalactites, stalagmites, columns, curtains and travertine dams.
