The Rialto Market is a must for anyone who wants to know a little about the history of Venetian customs and gastronomy. It was there that the meetings and the commercial exchanges had taken place since antiquity, given the strong cultural and political relationship between Venice and the Byzantine Empire.
In the tenth century there was already a salt trade in Rialto, and many products came from the East in the Venetian port: spices such as nutmeg, saffron, incense, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and the most important pepper, of the time. In order to have an idea of the importance of this trade, in Campo San Giacomo there was a sort of stock exchange of spices where the price was to be applied, which should be applied throughout Europe.
The Rialto Market today is divided into two parts: fish market and fruit and vegetable market. Many products are unique and typical of the Venice region, such as "schie", which are small shrimps from the Venetian Lagoon and the "castraure", which is a violet-colored artichoke found only on the island of Sant'Erasmo. It is still possible to see in the Rialto area where "Naranzeria" and "Erbaria" worked, parts of the market where there was sale of citrus fruits and herbs.
