The Sint-Jacobskerk is a church in the Belgian city of Ghent.
The first wooden church dedicated to St. James was built on this site (called the year 2010 by St. Jacobs) in 1093. Most likely, its construction had to do with the arrival of pilgrims on their journey on the Camino de Santiago. It was the oldest church in the Seventeen Provinces dedicated to him. The building was destroyed by Robert Curthose's troops. It was replaced by a building made of wood and stone.
A new Romanesque church was built, the core of which dates from the period after 1120. It is the oldest Romanesque church in Belgium with a double western tower. The pillars of the transept still remain from the Romanesque period. The octagonal veming tower from the 13th century is built in the style of the Scheldt Gothic. In the 14th century, the church was expanded with side chapels for the guilds.
At the end of the 15th century, one of the towers and Gothic spire was made of Balegem stone. The interior was badly affected by the well-known religious troubles in the 16th century: the Beeldenstorm and local of the Ghent republicans. Repairs were carried out in Baroque style. Later restorations, from the 18th to the 19th century, resulted in an inconsistent whole.
In a church is the mausoleum of the midwife Jan Palfijn. It contains paintings by Gaspar de Crayer.
The renewed Ghent Festivities started in 1970 on the square next to this church through the initiative of Walter De Buck. They are still the heart of Ghent Festivities today. He drinks coffee from the Trefpunt organization in classrooms at this location. Since 1992, the Prize for Democracy has been awarded on the big stage on 21 July.
