The mine and the respective village of the São Domingos Mines correspond to an old mining town. They had a connection to the fluvial-maritime port of Pomarão, on the Guadiana River, by means of a narrow track railway, about 15 km long, the São Domingos-Pomarão Line.
The mining complex is included in the Special Protection Zone of the Guadiana Valley (Natura 2000 Network) as well as classified as a Joint Public Interest since 2013.
The mining tradition in the area of São Domingos dates back to the Phoenicians and Carthaginians, and afterwards to the Romans, whose mining work extended from the beginning of the century until the end of the century, its main objective being the extraction of copper, gold and silver.
Mineral exploration at the site of São Domingos predates the Roman invasion of the Iberian peninsula, during which time the work was intensified by the exploration of the "iron hat" that covered the pyrite mass for the exploitation of copper, gold and silver.
In 1858 begins the modern exploration of the mine, on the initiative of the mining company "Mason & Barry"
Work continued until 1965, the year of ore depletion and mine closure. During this period, the work was done in the open air up to 120 meters deep, with work continued through wells and galleries up to 400 meters.
With the end of mining, the village fell into decay.
This was the first village in the country to have electricity.
