The “purunmachos”, as the locals of Amazonas call them, or the better known “Sarcófagos de Karajía” were exposed to the world in 1984 thanks to the investigations of the archaeologist Federico Kauffmann, immediately causing great expectations in the archaeological world. These unique samples of the mortuary rituals of the Chachapoyas culture were made around the years 1000 to 1300 AD.

The sarcophagi of Karajía were found on the edge of a cliff of calcareous rock, facing the abyss. They are the creation of the ancient Chachapoyas, who left the traces of their past in the most unsuspected places

It is located in the department of Amazonas, province of Luya, town of Karajía. The tour begins at the El Chillo ranch, in the city of Chachapoyas, from where it departs for Caclic (1 hour and a half by unpaved road). Then you take the road to Luya (45 minutes on an unpaved road), and from there west to Cohechán (50 minutes); later it continues north to San Miguel de Cruzpata (50 minutes) and finally a 50 minute walk to the Sarcófagos.

Currently, the presidency of the Amazon Region is implementing improvements for the tourism development of this invaluable resource, so it is expected that in 2008 the dissemination and implementation of improvements in the tourism infrastructure will benefit the communities directly. located on the outskirts of the important attraction.
