Created in the tenth century by D. Godo Trutesindo Galindes, it served as a refuge for Abbot Radulf during the invasions of Almançor (994). It was a Benedictine community.



D. Godo Trutesindo Galindes, Mediable Noble Knight was the ascendant of Egas Moniz, the steward raised his palace in this place.



This unoccupied monastery many years after its initial occupation fell into a state of degradation, having only been the subject of some maintenance work in the 11th century, but was however restored, rebuilt and completely restored in the mid-13th century. At this time the enlargement of the annexed Church was made. Again, in the eighteenth century and later in the twentieth century, it was something of restoration work.



This medieval monastery features an architectural style in the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. This monastery is part of a Romanesque church of three naves of appreciable proportions.



This is how this temple endured to the present day, becoming a national monument (Portuguese).



It is famous for its Romanesque church, with a beautiful rosette in its harmonious facade. Its outline influenced the entire region of Penafiel, and it can be said that this temple fits in the style of other Romanesque monuments, such as those of Roriz, Gândara, Travanca and Pombeiro.



Of adjusted proportions and with beautiful capitals, conserves grace and harmony. The damage and alterations it suffered over the course of the century, as well as the damage caused by the fire that in 1927 devoured its wooden ceilings, represent irreparable losses. But, still restored for many years, this monument is a precious piece of Romanesque architecture, with deep interest for the History of Art.



Following the extinction of religious orders in 1834, the convent was auctioned, but the church remained open to the public.



It is inside this monastery that is buried Egas Moniz who was the preceptor of the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques. Inside the tomb is a small copper box with the funeral ashes. The Tomb itself is a magnificent piece with high reliefs depicting the visit of D. Afonso Henriques's master to the Court of Leo.

The Paço de Sousa Monastery or Monastery of the Savior of Paço de Sousa is one of 21 monuments that make up the Romanesque Route of Vale do Sousa.



Classified as a National Monument.



It is worth knowing one of the greatest Romanesque legacies of northern Portugal, set in a place of great natural beauty.
