From July to November, the Garopaba coast receives very special visitors: the right whales (Eubalena Australis). These immense mammals, which can measure up to 15m in length and weigh approximately 40 tons, arrive in search of shallower and warmer waters to have and breastfeed their young. Usually, we see mothers with their babies swimming along the coast, doing acrobatic jumps and showing their fins. Right whales were hunted until 1973 when the last whaling station (Armação), located in Imbituba (Santa Catarina State), closed its doors. In September 2000, the Right Whale Environmental Protection Area (APA) was created on the southern coast of the State of Santa Catarina. APA's basic objectives are to protect the right whale and ensure the rational use of the region's natural resources. Some companies offer whale watching tours (Whale whatching). It is recommended to look for one that respects federal law 7643/87 and IBAMA ordinance 117/96, which guarantee the protection of whales against undue disturbances.
