In 1655 and 1656 there are built several barracks to house the thousands of soldiers who were already in the city. It is then that it acquires the current name. The barracks were demolished for being completely empty and completely ruined about 100 years ago.
In Elvas.
Street opened in 1580 for the entrance of D. Filipe I of Portugal that would be living in Elvas some months, then having the name of New Street of Saint Martin, name that was changed to New Street of the Castle, for lead to the castle.
