The Valdivia River is born in the city of Valdivia (Chile), where the Calle-Calle and Cau-Cau rivers meet in the east of Teja Island. Then it flows south of the island and receives the waters of the river Cruces that came from the other side of the island. From there it goes to the bay of Corral, where it flows. In this last route, the waters of the Estancilla estuary, the Cutipay river and the Tornagaleones river are added. Shortly after his birth, he crosses the Pedro de Valdivia Bridge, which links the city of Valdivia with Teja Island.

The river is navigable, although river traffic is scarce. On the river, the sport of rowing is practiced by several clubs.

The river rises and falls with tidal fluctuations.
