Yarowilca is called, as Guaman Poma - his illustrious descendant - called it, the first civilization that populated Tantamayo. Studies carried out by Waldemar Espinoza reveal that the yaros were a town with Aymara roots, which expanded to Cajamarca and Chachapoyas in the north and Ayacucho in the south. There is a possibility that this civilization has dominated the peoples that were liberated from the Wari expansion. Augusto Cárdich raises another theory, they were inhabitants of high areas who were forced to descend in search of fertile lands and better climatic conditions.

The province was created by Law No. 26467 of June 9, 1995, during the government of President Alberto Fujimori.

The Peruvian Province of Yarowilca is one of the eleven provinces that make up the Department of Huánuco, belonging to the Huánuco Region. It limits to the north and west with the Province of Dos de Mayo, to the east with the Province of Huánuco and to the south with the Province of Lauricocha.
