Das Gebäude befand sich 21 Jahre lang (mit langen Unterbrechungen) im Bau, wodurch sich die geplanten Kosten von 874 Millionen auf fast 5 Milliarden slowakische Kronen erhöhten (obwohl diese Zahl durch die relativ hohe Inflation der neunziger Jahre übertrieben wird). Das Gebäude wurde schließlich am 14. April 2007 eröffnet und beherbergt alle drei Ensembles des Slowakischen Nationaltheaters, obwohl die Ensembles das alte Gebäude in der Altstadt weiterhin parallel nutzen. Das Gebäude fasst in drei Abschnitten jeweils 1700 Zuschauer.
